(transcription of a notebook found in an abandoned lab)
I will go over the last few months, what an insane time in history, perhaps the end of human history as we know it. I was there when it all went down. I am actually responsible, atleast partially, for it. And I was one of the first to change.
Let’s start with me, my name is Michael Cooper Age 37. I am or was a scientist. I am formally trained in the fields of chemistry, medicine and I have a PHD in molecular biology. Four months ago I was working in a secret lab hidden under the Arizona desert. Some secrecacy was involved so people mostly called me “Mr. C”. The tests had to be done secretly because although the lab was run by a consortium of large industrial pharmaceutical companies, some of the drugs being tested weren’t exactly legal or FDA approved, and some of the testing practices were unorthodox to say the least. The purposes of this lab varied from illicit drug research and synthesis to trying to find cures for the flu and various other diseases. The lab complex was huge and very multifaceted. The research I was involved with was trying to genetically engineer and cultivate viruses that would specifically alter people on a cellular level to give them resistance to a variety of ailments from the common cold to different varieties of cancer. I was actually opposed to the whole project. It was my belief that irresponsible use of bio-engineering like this was a bad idea. Things started out slow, everything was almost a complete failure, several of our test subjects who were actually unfortunate drifters, did not survive the testing process. Things dragged on and eventually some progress was made slowly and surely. The main virus that showed promise was dubbed “The last virus”, sort of as a joke because of how sinister that sounds and how amazingly effective the virus was at immunizing people to most common viruses. One administration of “TLV” and in the initial tests at least the person would no longer show any capacity to be infected by any strain of the flu, the common cold or any of the other viruses we kept on hand. Our bosses would be very happy as would our shareholders. The rest is fairly well known by now someone mishandles the virus or a mutated test strain of it and infects themselves with it. By the end of this first scientist’s incubation period all the scientists in the lab are infected including myself. From there things pretty much went downhill.
From what I have seen the virus effects people in one of two ways. The first most common way the person becomes a completely mindless drone, with their insanity completely driven out of them and no capacity for thought let alone complex thought. These individuals walk around with extreme bloodlust and an insatiable cannibalistic taste for human flesh. The second type of infection is more of a carrier. You retain your mental faculties, but have all of the intended effects of the virus plus some that are unintended. Like the “drones” You no longer need to eat or drink and you barely need to breath at all. But there is something that happens in your head that makes you “not quite right”. You become completely sociopathic losing all sense of empathy. And there is a creeping bloodlust that eventually manifests itself and slowly drives you absolutely insane. This is me.
