Character Background:
William Blair, or just Blair, is from Fairbanks, AK. He's not a stranger to firearms and used to compete in rifle skeet shoot when he was growing up. He's a technophile and loves to tinker with electronics: making simple AM or FM radios, playing with perfboard, and assembling robotic kits. He's a ham radio hobbyist, but that's new, his knowledge isn't that good and burnt out some of his first radios. Because of these hobbies, he's a bookworm and very nerdy. He decided on an Electrical Engineering degree. He packed up his beloved things and got accepted into CalTech University. Blair is an optimist and non-confrontational. He doesn't like to lead or follow. There's only a very small handful of people he calls friends, but he's on friendly terms with almost everyone. The engineering campus at CalTech reinforced his love for electronics, becoming a bit of a MacGuyver. However, he needs access to electricity and supplies in order to solder electrical components into a device. If he has access to self-powered components (windup motors), he might be able to modify pre-existing electrical devices to use alternative power. However, further learning would be abruptly halted due to the Z-Virus.
It was near the end of his 3rd year when the Z-Virus caused havoc all over the world. He was in his dorm when he saw the Emergency Broadcast actually broadcast more than 15 seconds of beeeeeeeeeeep. His family was in Alaska and might be safe. He didn't know as cellphones and landlines were clogged with traffic. One of his friends, Ren Towne was outside banging on his dorm door, breaking Blair out of his reverie. Blair looks through the peephole and notices that his friend wasn't bitten or acting erratic. He lets him in, Ren's backpack acting as a mini travelcase. The both of them plan to storm the Electronics Workshop on campus, gathering as many supplies as needed. They have one empty duffel bag. Blair stuffs his backpack with two pairs of his heavier-duty clothing, bar of soap, two radios, and whatever liquids that were in his fridge. The duffel bag will hold components they need from the Workshop. Blair and his friend need to brave the campus grounds, knowing that ham radio will be easier to send and receive information from other potential survivors. Blair needs to cannibalize (HAH!) his windup clockradio and his ham radio. The ham radio works on batteries and now that zombies are everywhere, batteries won't be easy to get. As they make their way down the escape stairwell, Blair notices a fireman's axe in one of those “In Case of Emergency” cases. He kicks in the glass with his foot and takes the axe. This axe will come in handy. But I need some guns. I hope the gunshops and the indoor gun ranges weren't ransacked.
The sun's down and Venus is shining through the city's light pollution. Blair and Ren make their way across the campus, noticing how eerily quiet it is. They make it to the shop and Blair changes the ham radio to operate on the windup motor. Blair starts filling his duffel bag with a soldering supplies and components. Ren finds an empty backpack and follows suit. After they’re done, they go to the top of the roof. This gives them a bird's eye view of where they need to go. They can see that the city's lights are being shut off in massive quadrants. Eventually the entire city goes dark. The sounds of far-off screaming begin to fill the night. Will and Ren need to escape the city.

Pasadena, the City of Roses, is beginning to wilt.
